Nina Gobat

Senior Researcher

A senior researcher with a background in health, behavioural and social sciences, my current research focuses on strengthening the response to infectious disease epidemics through integration and uptake of evidence.

For the Platform foR European Preparedness Against Re-emerging Epidemics (PREPARE), I led research and operational readiness initiatives aimed at identifying solutions to ethical, administrative, regulatory and logistical barriers that stand in the way of clinical research being delivered during high impact infectious disease outbreaks. This was a cross cutting work stream aligned with pan-European clinical studies in community and hospital settings. We considered innovations to the way in which clinical research is designed, delivered and disseminated and aimed to influence a favourable environment for outbreak-relevant clinical studies.

I was closely involved in PREPARE's outbreak response escalation for COVID-19 that led to the H2020 funded Rapid European COVID-19 Emergency Research Response (RECOVER) research consortium. For RECOVER, I currently lead social science research relevant to COVID-19 clinical research and health service delivery.

For the European Clinical Research Alliance for Infectious Diseases (ECRAID-Plan), I led the development of outbreak response services and operations in contribution to the business plan for ECRAID.

For the National Institute for Health Research Health Protection Research Unit (NIHR HPRU) for Emerging and Zoonotic Infections, I lead public involvement in close collaboration with the knowledge mobilisation lead. For COVID-19, we were awarded funding from UK Research and Innovation to understand the dynamics of policy development and healthcare worker experience.

I am the social science lead for the Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN) Research group and chair the WHO COVID-19 Research Roadmap social science working group.

Previously, my research focused on the development and evaluation of complex behavioural interventions in public health and clinical settings. Prior to my work in academia, I worked in numerous clinical, operational health service roles, including in setting up and managing health services, in South Africa and the UK.
