TEACHING AND SUPERVISION

I am the joint module coordinator of the Advanced Qualitative Research Methods course (new for 2018/19).

I supervise both Msc EBHC and DPhil students (Tonny Muthee) and currently accept new students for research supervision in my area of interest.

Research

I am a clinical academic nurse with a background in respiratory nursing and my research focuses on the experiences of people living with a long-term condition (with a particular interest in chronic respiratory disease and older people) and how we can support their self-management and health care needs. My other interests are in health services research, particularly skill mix in the NHS workforce and health service re-design.

My research predominately involves qualitative research methods within health service research, but I also have expertise in conducting qualitative studies embedded within clinical trials (process evaluations); meta-synthesis and systematic reviews; and mixed methods research.

I am a Principal Investigator on a NIHR SPCR funded mixed method review (with Prof Mahtani and Dr Wong) identifying the facilitators and barriers to implementing an expanded NHS primary care workforce. I am also interested in complex intervention research and I am a co-applicant on a number of existing digital health projects, including a randomised trial of an internet-based intervention to promote mental well-being in the general population (SocWell), an HS&DR funded project on improving NHS Quality Using Internet Ratings and Experiences INQUIRE with Prof Powell; and SuMMiT-D, an NIHR PGfAR funded research programme developing and evaluating a mobile messaging support system for medication adherence in type 2 diabetes, led by Prof Farmer.
