Short Q&A
How long have you worked in the trial team?
I started just before Christmas 2021, so about four and a half months.
What made you decide to join the team?
In April 2000, I was working for the Oxford Festival of the Arts and they put me on furlough for a couple of weeks. During this free time, I saw the call out for volunteers for the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine trial and signed up.
Then in early 2021, while I was locked down in Wales, I decided to train as a Covid Vaccinator which I really enjoyed, especially the camaraderie of the vaccination team and the gratitude of the public. I wanted to continue my ‘Covid journey’, develop my skills and return to Oxford, so was delighted to see the Clinical Trial Administrator role advertised in November last year.
What did you do before joining the Clinical Trials Unit?
I have always worked in the arts and publishing, starting my career as a Stage Manager at Welsh National Opera, then moving into arts administration at The Oxford Playhouse and then Project Coordinator for Children’s Books at Oxford University Press. My last arts job was as Festival Administrator for the Oxford Festival of the Arts, and due to the pandemic, the Festival became digital rather than physical (a steep learning curve for me!).
What do you enjoy about the job?
Most of my week is spent on the trial inbox, and I love the challenge of dealing with all the many diverse queries that arrive there. When I started, I had to learn about the trial very quickly as the inbox was extremely busy and relentless. It has given me a huge overview of every aspect of the trial. I am proud to be part of something so important and relevant, and feel very valued for the work that I do.
